Cincinnati’s Terrace Plaza Hotel: An Icon of American Modernism by Shawn Patrick Tubb. Foreword by Aaron Betsky

CURRENTLY OUT OF PRINT This book is a history of the Terrace Plaza Hotel and the people and companies who made it. Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) between 1945 and 1946, the avant-garde Terrace Plaza, which now stands empty, opened in 1948 to national acclaim. The hotel was a showcase for Modern art and technology. Tubb reveals the deliberations and negotiations that brought internationally renowned artists like Alexander Calder, Saul Steinberg, and Juan Miró to Cincinnati with commissions from the hotel developers.

Natalie de Blois, a pioneering female architect, was lead designer for the 20-story skyscraper. The author explores the challenges of being a woman in mid-20th century architectural firms. Tubb's interviews with de Blois are a highlight of the book. Period photographs by Ezra Stoller and contemporaries illuminate the art and architecture.

Tubb's Cincinnati’s Terrace Plaza Hotel won Cincinnati Book Publishing's 2013 Young Voices Publication Award.
